Covenant's special partnership with Highland continues to lift up teachers and students by providing school supplies, reading buddies, teacher appreciation brunches and more. Read below for the many ways to get involved with Highland Renaissance Academy, our CMS partner school, located just north of uptown at 125 W. Craighead Road. We are staying fluid to meet the needs of the school and comply with CMS guidelines on volunteers during the 2021-22 school year.

Read, Roar, Soar! Read with a 3rd Grader
When: Volunteer with the group once a month for an hour. No prep work required.
What you can do: You'll be in a classroom with other volunteers to help children select books and read with the class.

Kindergarten Tutoring
When: First week of February until Spring Break (9-10 weeks), Tuesday or Thursday mornings for 1 hour (time to be determined by HRA)
What you can do: One-on-one tutoring with 3 kindergarten students (20 minutes each, the same students each week) working on sight vocabulary and reading. Tutors work on beginning sight words by using word cards, writing the words, tracing words, etc. In reading, tutor reads a simple, patterned book to student, tutor & student read together, and then student reads alone.

Highland Heroes Teacher Appreciation Brunch
When: Once a month; drop supplies off at the church any time.
What you can do: Simply contribute food, drinks, flowers or a note of encouragement. Drop them off in the Fellowship Hall bin (perishables in Room in the Inn fridge in kitchen) and a team of volunteers will deliver and set up at the school.

Summer Camp Buddies

What you can do: Support a Highland student who will spend a week at YMCA's Camp Harrison.

Freedom School
When you open books, you open doors. Freedom Schools summer programs give children three resources needed to develop their potential and inspire a love of reading and learning – literacy skills, character strengths and a community that believes in them. Covenant supports a Freedom School site at Highland Renaissance Academy serving 60 children in grades K-8. Learn more here.
